The red man’s fact

The Indian legend is that in olden time the fairest maiden of the tribe was sacrificed here to the Spirit of the Waters. The only daughter of a chief was chosen for the sacrifice. He bowed to the mandate, the voice of the tribe, but on the fatal day, when the white canoe of the maiden shot out into the Rapids, another white canoe containing her father followed swiftly after, and together they entered the hunting grounds of the hereafter through the green gateway of the swirling waters.
