Picture 14 - Reed Staithe, Ranworth.

REED STAITHE, RANWORTH. The above illustration depicts a reed-rond, with its harvest of reeds stacked on the banks to dry. These species of reeds grow to a great height, being principally used for house thatching, for which, on account of their great durability, they are specially adapted. They keep the house delightfully cool in summer, and cosily warm in winter. Waterfowl of various kinds find here a peaceful breeding-place, and as they are undisturbed, form quite a striking feature of the place. Permission to fish must be obtained, as the waters are strictly preserved. Ranworth is a pretty rustic village rural, quaint, and quiet.
